MARSfarm Version 1

The MARSfarm Version 1 is a countertop-sized smart greenhouse with consumable growing material kits.
Software controls the heat, light, and water, uploading data and pictures hourly. The MV1 is linked to an online
platform, which converts sensor data into charts and time-lapses. Students can program new climate recipes
sent to their greenhouse to replicate any conditions or climate they want to test.

Lighting – We designed a custom light module using four types of high-quality (93 CRI) Cree® LEDs with a CRI rating of 93+: red (660 nm), blue (448 nm), far-red (730 nm), and warm white (3500k). Each of these four LED channels is independently controllable using climate recipes.

Temperature – The MV1 is able to provide a temperature-controlled environment using a heater and exhaust fan system. This allows for other variables to be more noticeable when controlled. Alternatively, the heater may be used to increase the day temperature to 15F + above ambient room temperature, which is more than sufficient to cause heat-stress in most species of plant.

Irrigation – The MARSfarm automatic irrigation system allows you to not worry about water and instead provides experiences for your students to worry. The MV1 irrigation system can keep plants alive over Fall/Winter/Spring breaks. The easy-to-fill 2-gallon reservoir is NSF food-safe and even dishwasher safe – making it very easy to clean. The default system also includes a shallow flood tray with an overflow to prevent spills.
